Here they are again…

Nine months to go and it’s time for us Filipinos to cast our votes. Politicians are starting to knock into our doors. They are trying to be very good and present to us what they have achieved and conceal their broken promises.

Throughout history, politicians have used various methods, such as political rallies, speeches and political advertising to achieve their primary goal – the winning of votes. However, politicians have proven that the use of political advertisements is the most advantageous to convince the voters.

One of the regular television advertisements is Mar Roxas’ “Lalaban Tayo” wherein Mar is driving a tricycle and hears the complaints of the people. Another is Manny Villar’s famous “Sipag at Tiyaga” ad which is always reminding us that Villar came from the poor society and how he became rich and famous. Jejomar Binay brags what he has done in Makati City where residents can have free medicines, free education, free hospital fees, free movie passes and the like. They have been using their money to establish their positive images.

I’m sure that Roxas really planned that his marriage with Korina Sanchez will be set next year in order to gain much popularity. Sipag at Tiyaga of Manny Villar are not enough to be like him – one of the richest men in our country. Binay boasts that Makati is thye perfect place to live in. Makati as we all know is progressive with or without him because it is the business and commercial district of the country.

Campaigns are allowed 90 days prior to the elections for national positions and 45 days for local positions yet there are politicians who have regular television advertisements that serve as nationwide campaigns since last year.

Politicians are already preparing for the 2007 elections. It is so disappointing because they disregard the necessary things to do for our country. Politicians begin to concentrate on their presidential ambitions.

The best thing that these politicians can do is to be true to themselves. Why don’t they use their money by helping the poor? The only ones who benefit from the political ads are the television network executives.

As voters, let us make it sure that we won’t be blinded by the glitz, glamour and spurious advertisements and press releases of the politicians. We want genuine, service-oriented, noble, full of good ideas, morally upright and God-fearing leader. Let us cross our fingers that the next leader would do his/her work not only for his/her personal interest but for the betterment of the country and for the Filipinos.

The writer really hopes that we will vote the deserving leaders. Mabuhay ang Pilipinas! Long live the Philippines!
