Time to plant more TREES

By:Glacy Ann Bantolinao*
Throughout history humans have found it desirable to construct cities along streams.  Streams are sources of water for consumption, agriculture, and industry. Streams provide transportation routes, energy, and a means of disposal of wastes. Stream valleys offer a relatively flat area for construction. But, human populations that live along streams also have the disadvantage that the flow of water in streams is never constant. High amounts of water flowing in streams often leads to flooding, and flooding is one of the more common and costly types of natural disasters.
Here in davao city when the strong rain hit us after a "sudden" heavy downpour brought flashfloods. Base on my experience I can see jeepneys and motorcycles trapped along the street because of the high level of flood. Students and other people have no choice but to stoop down to the water for them to come home early. These alarming situations brought us lessons that we should take care of our environment and should plant more trees to prevent flooding.
The most affected barangays are Talomo Proper, Lizada, Crossing Bayabas, Los Amigos, and Calinan Riverside. But the government never fails to help the families who are victims of the flood. Let us be aware of the situations we are facing right now and let’s find ways to help prevent the cities from flooding. Time to plant more trees.
